Little things…

Sometimes the little things can make a big difference. A message from an old friend, out of the blue, that leads to an encouraging two-hour phone call. The unexpected extra-large tip on your worst day as a waitress, that lets you know you are appreciated. A prayer from a friend on a day when things do not seem to go right, and you needed encouragement. In any case what can seem like a small gesture from one person can be just what the other person needs and can fill another up. A blessing from God.

Little things were the theme at camp this summer. With a skeleton crew of one and a half staff and a few dedicated volunteers we tackled the little projects: a little paint here, a new sign there, a new trail up there. All are on the to do list but because they are small, they usually do not receive a top priority. This summer they climbed their way to the top.

Our summer camp staff completed the exterior paint on the staff row cabins finishing the last of the work funded by the Grey Family Foundation. The staff also started a trail project moving the trail head and adding a new trail to the trail system. The trail project was completed by a committed group of young volunteers. The new trail head is centrally located near the water tower and the new trail makes the walk to the ropes course safer for staff and campers.

The exterior of the bathrooms received a fresh coat of paint. The new color brings them in line with the paint scheme of the rest of the camp buildings. Over the next few weeks, we will wrap up the last of our summer projects, a new mural on the side of the rec hall and the return of the large Camp Elkanah sign on the creek side of Jericho.

What gives something value is not the cost but impact that it has on our lives. The phone call from a friend, the prayer from someone who cares. These things do not have a monetary value, but the value from their impact is priceless. And that is the way I feel about the projects we were able to accomplish this summer. They are not the largest projects ever tackled at camp, but they are part of the bigger story God is writing at Camp and their impact will last for years. Both in the life of camp but more importantly in the lives of those that invested in the project. Thank you!!
